MP3 Radio - Doesn’t that sound better than podcast?

For those of you just waking up this year, the word of the moment is ‘podcast.’ A podcast is a radio program that one can download to an MP3 Player or listen to on their computer. A podcast is also something I have yet to getting around to create. It is actually the reason why I started this website to begin with and yet, so far, I haven’t found the inspiration necessary to sit down and get it done.

Well, in the meantime, I figured, I could make a list of podcast that ARE created, a short list of podcasts I feel are listenable to the general populace at large, so that some of my friends, acquantainces and ne’er do wells could see what a good podcast actually sounds like. Because, let’s face it, an entertaining podcast on the web is like a needle in a haystack. Well, maybe a needle in 10,000 haystacks. Anyway, here you go. I’ve linked all of these back to their homepages. If you have Itunes, you should be able to find them (for free) at the Itunes music store and subscribe through its nifty podcast feature.

1.) The Bitterest Pill - A funny actor in Los Angeles talks about celebrity run-ins, being a stay at home Dad, and ranting about day to day nonsense.

2.) Videogamenews - A truck driver, a brick layer and an ex-chef talk about the video games, the video game industry and movies (sometimes.)

3.) Cush - Things I Say - A lot like bitterest pill but substitute single guy stories for the stay at home Dad stuff.

4.) Cinecast - Twice weekly show from 2 really knowledgable guys from Chicago about current movie releases, classic movies, overlooked movies on DVD and more.

5.) Coverville - All about bands covering other bands songs. I ussually fast forward over the host talking as it kind of annoys me for some reason, but the covers he finds are interesting.

6.) Diggnation - A show reviewing some of the more popular and interesting links on Digg.com. Digg is a good site, although its front page is decided by user votes, so its bound to become ridiculous at times (check my ‘98% of the worlds population are idiots’ theory). However, the guys balance out the popular stories or ‘diggs’ with some they personally found interesting.

7.) Ebert & Roeper At The Movies - Basically, an audio edition of their television show.

8.) Radio Clash - This one you won’t find at Itunes, basically because its an all mash-up podcast. If you don’t know, a mash-up is a song created by combining all or part of one song with one or more other songs or samples of songs. A lot of the music he plays is really cool although I lose interest when the focus moves from the music to his friends, who he occasionally has on as co-hosts.

9.) Reel Reviews Radio - Another great movie podcast, this one by a guy who seems to have a real passion for movies and a real knowledge of the details around the actors and directors in them.

10.) Tracks Up the Tree - This is the podcast that originally got me interested in some really cool indie music. Funtime Ben, the host, seems to be a really cool funny guy, too, but, as with Radio Clash, whenever he has a friend of his on as a cohost, I start to lose interest. Not sure why.

Anyway, there you go, 10 quality podcasts (by my estimate) to get you started into the wonderful world of non-broadcast radio. Let me know what you think if you try any of them out.
